Computer Audio
Recording
If you have access to a pretty fast computer then you are
in luck. All you will need is a special sound card to record into your computer
and the software to run it. Some simple one input items can be hooked up through
the USB hub on most newer computers without installing the card into your
computer. Remember though if you are recording many instruments at one time you
will probably want a multiple input sound card. Rule of thumb is one input for
each instrument but this can become very
expensive as the multiple input cards can be prohibitively expensive costing
hundreds or thousands depending on the quality. Get the best sound card you can
afford and remember to plan for more inputs if you plan on adding more
instruments at a later time.
Once you have the sound card hooked to your computer then
you will need a software program to run it. If you have a Mac computer then the
platform of choice is Pro Tools. The simplest version is available for free and
compatible with more expensive versions which can be upgraded to later. Used in
many pro studios Pro Tools is pretty much the standard of the industry. VDT
effects like reverb, chorus, delay and many others can be added to an existing
recording and then taken away effortlessly making computer recording the most
versatile and free form of all mediums. If you have a Windows based computer
then Cakewalk is the platform of choice for most users. Sonar in particular is
very versatile allowing audio recording and control of virtual or electronic
instruments though an optional midi interface allowing users to create virtual
drum parts as well as other instruments. Many new generation audiophiles are
converting to PC because of the cheaper prices on fast processors which are
essential to computer recording and the wide variety of Direct X plug ins for
creating effects like reverb, delay, etc. Remember you will need a computer with
a CDR if you want to burn your songs to CD.
Remember however that the most important thing in
recording is the skill of the musicians and the engineer. A good studio engineer
can make just about any equipment sound great and an inexperienced engineer can
make a mess even with the most expensive equipment. That along with the high
cost of getting started is why many musicians trust their demo to a professional
engineer and studio instead of doing it themselves.
Computer recording is at the high end of audio recording in terms of expense but
the quality of these recordings allow for a very professional job if done right.
In fact many pros use just this type of setup to record many styles of artists
