This section is the home of our past
Houston bands of the month.
We choose our artists of the month based on four ideals; talent,
originality, support of the Houston Texas live music scene, and heart. We choose bands who
represent all these ideals not just a few of them.
The bands are chosen by a panel of judges made up of the
producers and artists who work for SDR. All reviews are made impartially and
based solely on merit.

Lazarus X Houston Band of the Month

Alternative music recording artist Lazarus X are happy to announce the release of their debut album on

Starry Night Houston
Band of the Month November 2003 -
Starfyre is the bassist and vocalist for
the trio and she is supported skillfully. A nice mixture of experimental
rock and accessible songs with a strong
hook. This band rocks.
Strangelight
Houston Band of the Month December 2003 -
Strangelight
has
managed to score some decent press and pick up some fans along the way with
their own blend of diverse influences and swirling guitars mixed with high
falsetto vocals and out of the ordinary lyrics. Don't miss them.
Themagdalene
Houston Band of the Month January 2004 -
They may be known to some of you as Dogtooth Violet or
simply Magdalene but whatever you call it the members of this Houston local
band know how to rock. Take a look here.
Downfall 2012 Houston Band of the
Month
February 2004 -
Combining traditional metal guitar styling,
unusual drum rhythms, socially conscious lyrics and rap flavorings they
found a style that worked well for them. Take a look.
Deep Ella

With a nomination for best
pop/rock band in 2003 you may already have heard of Deep Ella. In fact most
people already know this is a great band. Don't let that stop you from taking
another listen.
Pale
Houston
Band of the Month
April
2004
- Pale was formed in 1997 by vocalist and guitarist Calvin Stanley after his
departure from El Nihilo. He released two solo projects and put together a group
to play a series of live shows.
Faceplant Houston Band
of the Month May 2004

From Houston's south side, Faceplant has been together for over six years and
has a reputation as a force on the national music scene. Loud and energetic with
tons of raw energy and an infectious hook this band is well on its way to
breaking nationally in a big way
Four Houston Band
of the Month June 2004 -
Four was founded in 97 and they have been
playing their version of heavy dark ambient metal to the Houston masses since
day one. Not your average metal band they blend all the classic elements of
heavy rock and alternative metal with unique elements all
their own.
Bring
Back the Guns Houston Band of
the Month July 2004
- Bring Back The Guns (formerly known as
Groceries, Gandhi in Vegas, and One Mighty Leg) are an indie rock / post punk
band of the highest order.
61 Cygni Houston Band of the Month
August 2006 - The star 61 Cygni was christened the "Flying Star" in
1792 because of its rapid motion a departure from the normal idea of the
behavior of a star. Houston band 61 Cygni is an rapid departure
from the traditional idea of what the Houston music scene is but they are very
much a part of what it can be.
The Jonx
Houston Band of
the Month September 2006 - At some point a band like the Jonx will
appear on the mainstream music radar like a low flying plane ready to destroy
your idea of what Houston music is and can be. For now they are an underground
phenomenon gracing the local stages and causing a stir among the Houston indie
music community.
The Hunger
Houston Band of
the Month October 2006 - The Hunger
began as an electro-metal garage band started by some local kids who admired
bands like Ministry and The Cure. Before they knew it this small Houston band
had a huge following and a record deal with an independent label.
Swarm Of Angels
Houston Band of
the Month October 2006 - Trash pop / glam / noise / post-punk rockers Swarm of Angels
consists of 6 musicians strait from the heart of the Houston indie music scene
who's live shows will assault your senses while their EP Plessure will leave you
wanting a whole lot more.
The Kants
Houston Band of
the Month November 2006 - Its hard to find a band that epitomizes the Houston indie
music scene better that The Kants. If you haven't been paying attention or
aren't involved in the scene you may have missed them. This is an oversight you
should quickly remedy. Reminiscent of 90's punk
the Kants are melodic and yet create discordant tension and have dynamic energy
to spare.
UME
Houston Band of
the Month December 2006 - If you live outside Houston chances are you haven't seen UME or heard much
about them. If you are a follower of the Houston music scene you probably know a
lot especially if you follow the indie scene. This dissonant or noise rock band
headed agilely by vocalist / guitarist Lauren Larson and backed by bassist /
vocalist Eric Larson and drummer Jeff Barrera and has added to the Houston music
scene an element that has been missing for quite some time, tension.
Silverleaf
Houston Band of
the Month January 2007 - Silverleaf is a modern rock
band which has experienced phenomenal growth in a short time but has musical
roots which run deep. The band was created after the demise of local group 24
Count. They immediately set their sights on the global market with designs on
reaching a large market of music fans.
Pseudo Quack Axiom Houston Band of
the Month February 2007 - "A
collection of artistic insights that explore the implications of the scalar
potential, the Zennek surface wave,
and faster than light communication. The greatest minds of the twentieth century
inspired the creators of zero point energy to entice the estranged bedfellows of
music and science to rendezvous at the cusp of the next century and all the
possibilities it entails."
