Digital Audio Workstations or DAW's
Less expensive than
computer recording, a digital audio workstation is another good option for
the home recording enthusiast. A digital audio workstation usually has a built
in mixer and effects such as reverb, chorus,
delay, and others. Costing a few thousand dollars these DAW's as they are
called will do a nice job and generally are less than a new computer and the
sound cards needed to run them.
If you can afford to plunk down a
several grand on a DAW of very high quality, then quality recordings are
possible although DAW's can be very
tricky to work with if you are not fairly literate in computers. Offering
up to 64 tracks
of audio they can easily accommodate most home recording projects. Many
digital consoles can record to hard discs similar to computers and many can burn
audio CD's as well and have many of the options available from computer
recording. Analog or tape recording generally give a warmer sound although many
professionals wait for the mix down stage to go to tape. If you choose digital
recording then be sure to add tube driven components to warm up the sound.
Remember however that the most important thing in
recording is the skill of the musicians and the engineer. A good studio engineer
can make just about any equipment sound great and an inexperienced engineer can
make a mess even with the most expensive equipment. That along with the high
cost of getting started is why many musicians trust their demo to a professional
engineer and studio instead of doing it themselves.
