Press kit or one sheet writing
A press kit or
one sheet is one of the most important things you can do as a
band except for a quality demo to get your music heard. If you don't know what a

To prepare a press kit first get a black and white or color photo of the band
or artist, around 5x7 is large enough. Use the best photo you can get. The photo
doesn't have to be artistic but it should clearly depict the band. Next you need
all the members of the band and the instruments they play. Put any contact
information on there plus any band websites and email addresses. Next get any
positive press that your band has received and add it to a section labeled press
coverage. You can also add a section with interesting facts. This is supposed to
be used for interviews to help the interviewers ask interesting and amusing
questions. Also include a list of the songs on the demo and the times of the
songs.
If you don't have much information to send then just send a one sheet which
basically gives the basic band info and contact information. Be sure that your
demo or one sheet says which songs you hear as your singles. Don't forget to
tell the record label or producer about the songs and what they are about. Also
be clear about what you are looking for from them. If you are mailing to a
producer and you want to be signed then be sure to say you are shopping for a
record deal. If your sending it to a radio station then ask for the album to be
played on the radio, etc.
Remember before you send out a press kit or
one sheet to call or email if you are unsure whether the record label or band is
accepting demos of your
genre of music. Also verify the contact information. Once you are sure that you
you are sending the demo to the right
people then be sure and check your
address, email, phone, fax, and any other contact info. Then double check their
address and info. Once you are ready drop your one sheet or press kit and CD in
an envelope and drop it into the mail. After a few weeks follow up by call or
email to see if the submission was received. If so ask for feedback. Be polite
no matter what the response, many times people may change their mind or styles
of music may change so don't burn your bridges.
Now that your demo and press package are ready the next question is who to send
