Progressive metal or prog metal as some call it is a
combination of progressive rock and heavy metal which came into popularity during the late 80's
with cutting edge bands like Queensryche and Dream Theatre. Progressive metal
has a small but very loyal and devoted group of fans that have allowed it to
survive when more mainstream genres have died out. Progressive metal combines
many unusual elements
inherited
from the progressive
rock tradition such as incorporation of Jazz,
chamber music, and other varied influences.
Queensryche was one of the first bands to break from
the heavy metal
and hair band
stereotype to fuse progressive elements into their heavy music format. Albums
like Operation Mindcrime combine the heavy guitars of
metal with progressive compositional techniques and other staples of prog rock
like album themes. Operation Mindcrime was a brilliant opus combining frenzied
guitars, dark themes like government mind control and other abuses.
Dream Theatre are well known in the genre combining
elements of jazz, unusual scales and other extremely complex arranging
techniques to make what some argue is the best examples of modern progressive
metal. Other bands like tool take a bit more traditional approach but still
break from the normal metal traditions to make some of the most commercially
accessible progressive metal. Progressive metal is alive and thriving in the
underground and has as yet escaped the inevitable demise that comes after great
commercial success much to the delight of most fans.
