Psychedelic metal is a type of
heavy metal
music which arose in the early 1990s. Post metal bands
began to combine psychedelic rock and grunge
and other influences and combining it into an underground movement some labeled
stoner rock. Bands like Kyuss, Masters of Reality, and Monster Magnet were
among
the most popular practitioners.
Kyuss formed in California in late 1980 when a group of
four high school
friends formed a small band called Sons of Kyuss. Combining varied musical influences
vocalist John Garcia and guitarist Josh Homme combined with bassist
Chris Cockrell and drummer Brant Bjork to make up genre defining band eventually
known just as Kyuss.
In 1992 Chris Goss of
Masters of Reality joined the band for the earth shattering Blues For the Red Sun
which most consider their best album in their short career. Blues For The Red
Sun was a imposing work taking the band into a different direction with
transient moments worthy of
psychedelic rock. Walls
of feedback and shifting melodies combined with tribal drums made it a force to
be reckoned within the genre. Welcome To Sky Valley in 1994 took baroque
songwriting and combined it in typical Kyuss style to
form
another solid album from the band. Post breakup band members went on to join or
form other very influential psychedelic metal bands. Brant Bjork played in Fu
Manchu, Nick Oliveri founded the Mondo Generator before joining the hugely
popular Queens of the Stone Age. John Garcia founded Slo Burn
and Unida, Josh Homme, founded the band Gamma Ray which later became the Queens
Of The Stone Age.
Master's of Reality formed in 1981 by singer and
guitarist Chris Goss and lead guitarist Tim Harrington combining a mixture of
influences including hard
rock, jazz and
progressive rock.
The result is an unusual mixture of blues,
metal,
hard rock
and psychedelic
influences combined skillfully in a unique blend. Rick Rubin famed producer took
them under his wing putting the band through a grueling six months recording
their debut album Blue Garden. The album struck a favorable chord with reviewers
and fans alike. Hailing from Syracuse, New York a very secluded industrial town.
The band signed a record deal late in their careers but have seemed to suffer
no ill will for this.
