How do I record the Violin, Cello, Trumpet, Oboe, Strings, Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet, French Horn, Harp, or Tambourine. There are many instruments in this section so we'll try to keep it brief. Violin - A nice condenser mic a few feet in front of the violin and around 6 feet high pointed at the strings to give it depth. Move back for more room ambience. Pretty easy to record

Oboe - Light compression with a nice bass sensitive Sennheiser MD-441 or similar dynamic mic even with the top of the head of the player and tilted towards their waist. Strings - Use a
large diaphragm condenser microphone in the best room Flute - Light compression with a nice condenser mic about a foot to two feet over the flute looking down on it. Saxophone -

Clarinet - Light compression with a nice bass sensitive condenser mic even with the top of the head of the player and tilted towards their waist. French Horn - Light compression with a nice condenser mic about a foot to two feet from the bell and aimed a foot over the top of the bell. Harps - Use two or three large diaphragm condenser microphone in the best room you can find with two mics set up in front of the harp at around 4 feet and pointed at the bass and treble strings. Record in stereo and with a room mic as far away as possible if you have an extra mic. Double or triple track it to make it sound bigger panning it hard left right and center in the case of triple tracking. Ad reverb judiciously in the mix.
