Lazarus X?

I must confess that when I was assigned the task of
covering a private release party for Lazarus X and their CD Weapon of Love I
didn't know that much about the band. Of course I had heard rumblings that
something unusual was going on with this indie rock band from southern Texas, but you
hear a lot of things in the music business
and most of them are not true. Of course the times when the rumors are right
are the ones I live for, so I decided to make the trip to Houston and see
for myself.
The party was hosted by Silver Dragon
Records a label started by indie rock bands and producers. I arrived
at just before midnight as the invitation had asked. I was ushered
up to the roof of the building where about two hundred people were already
crowding the stage in anticipation. People looked excited and so I asked a
group of guys standing in the back what was going on. Lazarus X is
going to take the stage soon." he said. "Have you ever seen them?" he
asked. I shook my head no slightly flustered. "Weapon of Love is
a
phenomenal album." one said flashing his advance copy of the CD. "I think
this is the CD people will be talking about all year so It's pretty
cool to be one of the first to own it." exclaimed another. I had to admit
the excitement was a bit infectious. After another 15 minutes of small talk
the band took the stage.
From the first note I knew this wasn't
your typical rock band. The first song
which lead singer David Lazarus and company performed was called Honorguard,
a song warning of the dangers of technology gone
wrong. The song was polished to perfection and lead singer and
guitarist David Lazarus delivered a highly charged and emotional
performance. I was impressed, at least so far. First I couldn't tell who they sounding like, but they sounded really good.
That was a welcome change. I hoped
this song wasn't just a fluke. It wasn't. In fact the songs seemed to get
better as the night went along. The drums kept time driving the energy of
the band forward to a heightened frenzy. By the time I saw the last song an
hour and a half later I was a full fledged fan.
After the show I got a chance to sit down with
David Lazarus and talk to him about the album. He was actually very nice and
spent over an hour answering all my questions. It's very rare to run into a
musician who's talented and also a genuinely nice person. When I found out
the ideas behind the album I was totally hooked. I found "Laz" as many of
his fans call him to be intelligent, articulate and kind.
More importantly this band rocks. Do yourself a big favor and buy this album.
